A103 update

Well there’s news and there’s not news, in a peculiarly ‘messed up’ kind of way.

The big development is that I’ve switched tutor groups.

The sole reason for this is because the OU had put me in a tutor group that invoked a two and a quarter hour round trip.

Whereas the tutor group that’s twenty minutes away… doesn’t.

Unfortunately (1)…

This change means that I have to go to another introductory tutorial tonight (having already attended the introductory tutorial in my former group in Birmingham).

Although my new tutor has said that I don’t have to attend I’ve decided that I’m going because as well as spending time getting to learn about the processes (again), procedures (again) and methodology (again), it’ll also be a chance to meet everyone in the tutor group.

This is a valuable opportunity to get to know the other students as well as being a pointer on where people are in their personal development. It’s also an opportunity to set up local networking contacts; too many good things to miss out on (whereas I’d be coming in as the ‘new boy’ if I missed tonight).

So I’m going. Again.

Unfortunately (2)…

My former tutor has suggested that my new tutor should be the one to read, mark and comment upon my submitted assignment (TMA01).

This seems logical.

I’ve put this point to my new tutor and I’m waiting for her to get back to me, but the cost – in terms of time – means that I’m not likely to get the feedback for TMA01 until well until next week or possibly later when, it seems, everyone else on the course will have had their feedback today.

Meanwhile elsewhere…

Work continues on TMA02 – this assignment is in four parts.

Part 1: Art History, is the analysis of a painting previously described (and believe me, very extensively googled from all over the world!).

Part 2: Literature, is to read and in no more than 300 words, write an analysis of the sonnet ‘February Afternoon’ (1916) by Edward Thomas.

Part 3: Music, is to write, in no more than 300 words, a descriptive analysis of ‘For No One’ by The Beatles – paying particular attention to features such as the verse-chorus structure, melody, rhythm, timbre, texture and the relationship between words and music.

Part 4: Philosophy, is to answer five questions in no more than 300 words (total) relating to a (seriously pretentious yet totally belief-suspending) dialogue between two people on artistic creativity.

All four parts are to be completed and submitted by 16th November.

TMA02 part one, is in process; should be completed by this weekend.

TMA02 part two, haven’t looked at it yet but as I have a blind spot about poetry anyway it’s going to be hard to get to grips with!

TMA02 part three, I’m really looking forward to that one, I might even do it next instead of the poetry thing.

TMA02 part four, whilst very comfortable with both objective and subjective philosophical discussions in various conceptual or abstract forms, I’m not sure I will be able to get my head around the tedious dialogue construction that we have to work with!

Ah well, at least it’s keeping me off the streets at night.

You are absolutely right. I apologise to you and everyone else for asking the question.

  2. Terri says:

Hi everyone! Have just sat down to tackle part 3 but havnt got a clue what am doing! am really panicking now have finished all except part 3 and i have to rewrite part 1 as the hard drive on my computer died and i lost the lot!…I think am in for a couple of late nights! Good luck to everyone x

  3. Brennig says:

Right, I’m stepping in – this is my blog after all.

Lee, asking anyone for sight – even in outline value – of their coursework is cheating. It’s the first step to plagiarism.

If, as you say, you want to do the work for yourself you should just do the work for yourself. The answer is in the coursework notes and the accompanying study material. If you are having difficulties you should speak to your tutor. You should not ask for a peek of anyone’s work.

So don’t, it offends everyone who has worked hard under their own steam.

If this continues I shall have no option but to disable comments on this blog.

  4. Lee says:

im now writing Part 3 and then I’m finally done! Yay! once again, I’m sorry for causing offense earlier to the host and everyone else, it really wasn’t meant that way! have fun all! I’m sure we’ll get there!

  5. Terri says:

What is meant by ‘timbre’? Havnt got a clue what it is. Can anyone help please x

  6. Tribs says:

Really really stressing! Don’t really know what i am doing with this course! I kind of have the basics for the first 3 well, part 2 & 3. part 1 do’nt really have a clue and with part 4, I understand it but how do you write 300 words and how do you type it up do you copy out the structure of the paragraphs in the book and then write a few lines explaining that?! i don’t think i will be sleeping much tonight or tomorrow been so ill so quite far behind as you can see! please email me back on tribster113@hotmail.co.uk if you can help at all the sooner the better…thanks! x

  7. Brennig says:

No need for apols Lee; it’s easy to get lost on this one, I’ve been there and I’m sure everyone else has. The consolation is that this question contributes such a small percentage to our overall mark. Hardly worth bothering with really., 🙂

  8. Lee says:

is anyone else having problems accessing the Studenthome page on OU?

  9. Lee says:

Hey Brennig, I finally submitted the TMA! Yay!! Thats the end of 12 hours of stress today… literally… I can sit back and go to sleep now…bound to be wrong, but hey, at least I can say its done now…

  10. Brennig says:

    Terri, that’s a joke, right?

  11. Brennig says:

Congratulations. If you’re done you’ve completed earlier than I have; I’m still editing (faffing) with the philosophy section. Well done.

  12. DanB says:

I have sussed it eventually thank the lord. Part 4 is coming on nicely. It is so great to know that there are other people out there who are in the same situation. Hats off Brenning this blog is a fantastic idea

    Hi Everyone

    I’m another A103 sufferer!

I’ve completed TMA02 parts 1, 2 & 3. I’m just starting 4. My tutor has agreed an extension but hopefully will have it done in next few days.

I don’t think i’ve done well at all on part 3. I found it very, very boring and couldn’t get to grips with it at all.

Parts 1 & 2 I think i’ve done OK with. Part 1, I think i’d rather have watched paint dry than do the assignment BUT hey ho, it’s not all going to be fun is it?!

I found part 2 the most interesting once i’d got into it.

  14. Magnificentapples says:

    Hi all!

I’ve been struggling with this as well – it’s lovely to meet people who feel the same as me! I’m tackling the music question tonight and feel completely out of my depth. I’m just going to my best and try harder next time – i’m only just beginning to realise the commitment required to do this course!

  15. Ashley says:

    Hello All,
I am completely lost on part 3 and its due in a matter of hours, I am absolutely lost! I keep re-reading the music unit and listening to the damn song but nothing is sinking in! I obviously never appreciated music in school!
    I am such a loser!
    Good luck everyone!

  16. Tribs says:

Ok so i have complete parts 3&4 totally now but i am soooo stuck on 1 and a little on 2 any suggestions on what to do, i was going to ask my tutor for an extension but didn’t no how much notice i had to giv before the deadline…i thought it was to late! does this have to be in by 12:00 tonight or can it be in tomorrow?

  17. Tribs says:

sorry just re read what i wrote if course it is tomorrow!

  18. Lauren says:

For all you facebbok users you can add the OU to your friends and recieve updates via face book.
Also you can join groups and discussions about your course.
I am currently studying A103 and have found this blog to be awesome chatting with like-minded people!
Get yourself a facebook account and add me lauren crowe and then we can form a group, we may be able to help other like minded people who are in need like us who have not yet seen this blog, and we can allso link back to the blog from here, thus bringing more attention to the blog and getting a broader range of people!
Hope to see you all there soon!!!

  19. Babs says:

Thank the lord!! I thought i was been a numptey in finding TMA2 a bit tricky. Due to computer virus and not being organised I have had to ask for an extention. Some good advice here though.

  20. NICKI says:

Boy! Do I wish I had found this blog sooner.
I am also struggling with the music element. Hoping to get it finished tonight. Thanks for the tips Victoria:)

  21. Tribs says:

did everyone manage to write 300 words for all of the sections? How much notice to you have to give your tutor for an extension? just over 3hours left before it has to be in argh!

  22. Terri says:

Have just submitted my TMA! Dont think its a pass but at least I tried….will be biting my nails now until the result! Think I will look at TMA 3 cos i want to be better prepared next time!…Good luck to everyone let us all know how you do x

  23. Brennig says:

    I got 300 words for Parts 1, 2 & 3 and 285 for Part 4. Don’t know if that’s good or bad.

  24. NICKI says:

I just emailed my tutor, he did say that he would be flexible for a couple of days extension.
Still slogging away on music here. Did you finish Tribs?

  25. Jimbo says:

Hey Lauren, am struggling to find this OU group on FB. Also I searched for you but there are loads of Lauren Crowe’s out there!

Philosophy questions got done in the end. Really not sure I did that bit at all well.

Finding the Colosseum a bit more interesting.

  26. Brennig says:

Has anyone received their TMA02 back yet? And if so, how went the marking?

  27. Terri says:

just got my TMA02 back…got 75! am really pleased cos I thought I had failed it. Hope everyone else has passed x

  28. JezzaBelle says:

I handed mine in on Wednesday. It wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever written, but fingers crossed for a pass. I hope you all get great marks. I did try my very best to understand what they wanted, but the music bit was beyond me if I’m honest. It was a really hard slog, and now only just 12 days to study & write TMA03. They haven’t left much time between essays, even if TMA02 had been in on time!

  29. Jimbo says:

    TMA02 = boo hoo
I didn’t do that well. I Got 50. My tutor added loads of comments to my essays saying “this and that” should have been included.

If I had added his comments it would have doubled the size of each essay and busted the word limits.

I am rather confused as I don’t understand how I am supposed to adhere to the word limits and include everything he is suggesting.

I did ok in the Philosophy section in the end. It seems I understood more that I thought 🙂

  30. Jimbo says:

Enjoying the Colosseum block. Much more my bag. Am hoping to go on to History at the next level.

  31. Lauren says:

    Hey jimbo,
    Sorry for the delay.
try searching on facebook for my email address laurenccrowe@hotmail.co.uk

There are a few of us on there now!!
Hope to see you there soon 🙂

  32. Melanie says:

Hi everyone, it’s been awhile since I last checked in and by the sounds of everyone has felt the same on TMA 2. I got my results last Friday and I got 79%, I was made up as I thought i’d trashed the Art and Sonnet parts. The colosseum is killing me though, is anyone sick of being surrounded by loads of books? I decided to start TMA 3 early because we did a tutorial along the lines of the essay question but worried i’ll get behind as not started anything to do with second part. Can’t wait for a subject that I feel good about, surely there’s got to be one!!! Good luck everyone with TMA 3 Mel x

  33. Gillian says:

Hi everyone – been reading all your comments avidly but this is my first. I got my results back 59% (a bit gutted if i’m honest but on a brighter note i got 23/25 on philosophy – i thought this was too simple to be correct but it appears not. Looks like i’m heading down that route then. only one i filed was music – just could not get to grips with it at all. At least i passed overall. Not too worried about the Colosseum one but better not speak too soon. good luck to everyone on that. G

  34. JezzaBelle says:

I got 74%!! I was so pleased with that mark, because I really thought I would be scraping a pass.
The Coloseum essay is a bit daunting now, as I got into a comfort zone with the 300 word limit in TMA02.
I think maybe I’ll write some 300 word chunks, and then pad them out to make them link up and up the word count.

  35. JezzaBelle says:

    *Colosseum. I can spell!!

  36. Jolene says:

Still haven’t received my TMA02 back, I know I had an extension but thought I might have had it back by now???? Glad to hear most of you have done pretty well.

  37. Rich says:

Hi, just found this. Glad to know there’s others going through what I am. I just got my TMA 02 mark back, 74%. I was quite pleased with that but also a bit annoyed; as Jimbo said how can you cover all your ideas in the word limit? My tutor remarked I could expand on this or that, but the word count was 297/298 meaning I’d have to sacrifice a separate point. Argh!

Oh well, onwards and upwards – hope everyone is enjoying block 2.

  38. alexis says:

what was the pass mark for the individual sections of tma 02? i found the second part of the second colosseum question pretty hard, only wrote about a paragraph about why it the opinions differed. how did everyone else get on?

  39. JezzaBelle says:

Did you mean TMA03? That one was on The Colosseum.
I got mine in on time, but haven’t had it returned marked yet.

  40. Brennig says:

    A public answer to a private email from a non-broadband internet user…

Should the podcast go in to detailed discussion of OU-related activities, it would be reflected in the podcast notes. I hope that deals with your question?
