A103 TMA04: History

Read carefully the following extract, which is from a speech made by Jacques Roux before the French Convention on 25th June 1793:

[extract not reproduced here for copyright reasons]

Imagine that you are writing a study of Paris during the Terror. In an essay of no more than 800 words consider the following three questions:

1. What kind of primary source is this and what strengths and weaknesses does it have as a source for your study?

2. Are there any particular words and phrases in the document that require elucidation or special comment before you can make use of it?

3. What can you lean from this source with respect to Paris during the Terror? You should distinguish, where appropriate, between witting and unwitting testimony.

When you have completed it, please send it to your tutor to arrive no later than 4th January 2008.

Segueing from your expertise in vegetarian spag bol to your studies on radical french revolutionaries – I wonder if Jaques Roux is a forefather to Michelin starred Michel Roux? Now there’s a thought. “Let them eat cake!”

  2. Brennig says:

Harry you’re a star. Until now I thought my wife was the only person to use the word ‘segue’ correctly. πŸ™‚ My favourite is the Welsh/Frenchman – Jack Hughes (geddit?) lol

  3. Mya says:

To be submitted no later than 4th January??Crikey. Merry Christmas. Not.

    Mya x

  4. Brennig says:

Mya: The next one’s due in by 25th January too! πŸ™‚

  5. froggywoogie says:

Hmmmmm I used to live in Paris and having to cope with the crowds, public transportations and traffic jam was a daily terror.
Now did I do it right? At least there is no more than 800 words…

  6. Mel says:

Hi Brennig, how’s the tma’s going? Think OU are sadistic. Have you noticed that they’ve given us 2 weeks off for christmas, how generous but how are you supposed to fit it all in? That’s my rant over. How did you do on tma 3? Mine not bad considering I didn’t complete unit. It is relentless though. Are you ready for Crimbo?

  7. JezzaBelle says:

I haven’t even looked properly at TMA04 yet. However, I think I might re-read Les Miserable, because it’s more interesting than the bits I’ve glimpsed at in the OU books. It’s also really relevant, and I’m sure I can pinch some quotes from it!!

  8. PH says:

I hate this TMA this unwitting and witting is a load of garbage its a gimmick at the very best, worthless

  9. Katrina says:

Glad to see I’m not the only one hating this TMA4, I’ve really struggled to fit all the reading in and that was with the whole Xmas fortnight off work!!
Found your blog on google, hope you don’t mind!!

  10. Laura says:

Hahaha glad to see I am not the only one struggling… here I am one day before deadline with nothing more than an opening paragraph… arghhhhhhhhhhhh

Good luck – my marks are distinctly average so am dreading my grades going down… shouldn’t this be getting easier?!!!

Fingers crossed I have a brainwave, hope you’ve done ok!

(I also came across you on google in a last ditch attempt to find some gem of information to free me from writer’s block…)

  11. Jimbo says:

They tried make me re-read the unit but I said no, no, no.

Am doing TMA04 tonight and am feeling ok with it. I am into History and quite enjoyed it although it was long. The practice essays were very helpful and working through the CD with Arthur Marwick helped. Not looking forward to the 60’s unit as it’ll be “marwick, marwick, marwick”.

  12. Brennig says:

    Hi Laura, and welcome.

I don’t know what average is but I’m sure my marks are below that line, wherever it is.

I’ll be submitting late – but only by a day or two at the most.

Good luck to you – and just for your info, this blog is being googled by over 200 fellow A103 students a day!

  13. Teresa says:

  24. Rachel says:

Finally done, thanks to Jules for your help with that and for caring.

  25. JezzaBelle says:

My TMA04 was handed in two days late because my PC decided to give up the ghost. I had to beg, borrow & steal to get a new one.
Has anybody had results for this yet? I hope you all got a good mark. This certainly wasn’t an easy assignment.

  26. Kay says:

Hey fellow A103ers, well to make you all feel a bit better, I still haven’t submitted my TMA 04!! Not getting to close to doing so anytime soon either! Aaah! I feel like I am never going to catch up on all of this, but I must keep going!

  27. JezzaBelle says:

I got an amazing 78% on this one! Anybody else got their results back yet? I’d love to know how you all did.

  28. Sarah says:

70 something, forgotten already as it was a shock!

  29. Brennig says:

    A public answer to a private email from a non-broadband internet userÒ€¦

Should the podcast go in to detailed discussion of OU-related activities, it would be reflected in the podcast notes. I hope that deals with your question?

  30. dan says:
