Somebody That I Used To Know (27/29)

The track ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, by Gotye, is doing the rounds. Yesterday, whilst having breakfast, I heard it twice on the music system in the restaurant.

It’s a catchy little tune, and Gotye (real name Wouter De Backer), has a stunning voice that is strongly reminiscent of the early Peter Gabriel.

Kimbra, (the New Zealand singer/songwriter who provides the combination second voice/backing vocal on the track) has gorgeous soft/hard/soft vocal qualities, and a lovely pitch.

But as the Gotye/Kimbra version is being so well-promoted throughout the planet, and so widely-received by the mainstream media, I would like to share a different version of the song with you (h/t to @bravenewmalden for the pointer).

This version is by a band called Walk Off The Earth and features all five members of the band playing one guitar.

At the same time.

p.s. How’s your Monday?

They are Canadian! This version is getting a lot of radio play here. They just did a cover of From Me to You which was recently in a commercial by a national cell phone company. Their original works are quite good too.

Thanks for the pointer, J, I appreciate it. I sent the band an email yesterday and we are in conversation about their work. 🙂

  2. Wow, never seen a bunch of folks play the guitar like that before.

Love this song, but it totally, totally breaks my heart. I’m sure I’m not the only soul out there who feels that way when they hear it.

Thanks Yasmin. Re this song, I enjoy the second part/female lyrics; I see them as ‘the other side of the story’.
