{"id":10348,"date":"2015-01-05T10:20:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T10:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=10348"},"modified":"2015-01-05T10:23:23","modified_gmt":"2015-01-05T10:23:23","slug":"driven-to-the-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=10348","title":{"rendered":"Driven to the edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning&#8217;s 125-mile motorway journey (M6, M42, M5, M4, M32) brought home to me just how poor the standard of driving is in this country.<\/p>\n<p>So few motorists seem to be aware that the Highway Code has been updated.<\/p>\n<p>So few motorists seem to be aware that driving standards have been improved (tightened).<\/p>\n<p>Nobody seems to understand braking and stopping distances.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody seems to comprehend that being too close to the vehicle in front puts themselves at risk.<\/p>\n<p>And nobody seems to be aware of just what the definition of &#8216;being too close&#8217; is.<\/p>\n<p>Lane discipline, on the UK&#8217;s motorways, needs to be renamed to &#8216;lack of lane discipline&#8217;, to reflect the true state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that the vast majority of people who drive on British roads do not know that the law now says that you should use the left-hand lane at all times, except when overtaking.<\/p>\n<p>If we had a government with its finger on the pulse of an everyday problem, it would change the law to allow motorists to pass lane-hoggers on any side (as is allowed in the US).<\/p>\n<p>If we had a government with its finger on the pulse of an everyday problem, it would introduce a compulsory motorway test.<\/p>\n<p>If we had a government with its finger on the pulse of an everyday problem, it would introduce compulsory retesting (to include motorway driving), every five years.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of any of these remedial actions being put in place, we have an escalating problem; the majority of road users have not read the Highway Code in 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Or longer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of any of these &#8211; painfully obvious &#8211; remedial actions being put in place, we have people avoiding accidents by virtue of anticipating, and being aware of, the stupidity of other road users.<\/p>\n<p>The standard of driving, as seen from the seat of my car this morning, was shocking.<\/p>\n<p>I had to take avoiding action six times, to dodge the unbelievably dangerous actions of morons.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s six times, this morning, I could have been involved in an accident, had I been less attentive to the idiotic intentions of people who, quite clearly, should not have been behind the wheels of cars, vans, lorries.<\/p>\n<p>Variable speed limits (the raising and lowering the speed limit as dictated from a central command centre) is not the answer to the question of how do we control the morons on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that seems to be our government&#8217;s only response to the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Compulsory retesting is the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because without compulsory retesting, the problem will never go away.<\/p>\n<p>The problem will only get worse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning&#8217;s 125-mile motorway journey (M6, M42, M5, M4, M32) brought home to me just how poor the standard of driving is in this country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-10348","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-stuff","two-columns"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10348","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/13"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=10348"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10348\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=10348"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=10348"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=10348"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
