We are accustomed to seeing the inevitable stores in ‘other’ countries.<\/p>\n

Countries we don’t live in, but visit.<\/p>\n

You know the stores.<\/p>\n

Starbucks, Costa, Chanel, D&G, Levi, Subway, Marks and Spencer, Zara, McDonald’s, KFC, and all the other usual suspects.<\/p>\n

We’ve seen them in a dozen cities in Spain.<\/p>\n

And France.<\/p>\n

And Italy.<\/p>\n

And everywhere.<\/p>\n

Sadly, while on walkabout in downtown Shanghai today, I saw them.<\/p>\n

Costa, McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks.<\/p>\n

And all the others.<\/p>\n

The Nanjing Road West is Shanghai’s equivalent of London’s Oxford Street.<\/p>\n

And that makes me feel sad.<\/p>\n

As you can see.<\/p>\n

\"Me,<\/a><\/p>\n

Local businesses being swamped by the global economy.<\/p>\n

Unexpected, in The People’s Republic of China.<\/p>\n

\"Subway<\/a><\/p>\n

And why not feel sad, at encountering this in the People’s Republic of China?<\/p>\n
