{"id":12067,"date":"2017-02-27T07:11:02","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T07:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=12067"},"modified":"2017-02-26T20:23:45","modified_gmt":"2017-02-26T20:23:45","slug":"blogathon-2717-self-driving-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=12067","title":{"rendered":"Blogathon 27\/17: Self-driving car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I like my new car.<\/p>\n<p>I Bluetooth my phone to the in-car entertainment system and amazing things happen.<\/p>\n<p>I can read incoming SMS messages on a display.<\/p>\n<p>I can view and autodial my contacts by voice-activated command.<\/p>\n<p>I have full hands-free\/speakerphone capability as I trundle around the countryside.<\/p>\n<p>I can plug my iPod Classic in to the in-car entertainment system, and access any of my many playlists\/podcasts.<\/p>\n<p>The external lights are fully automatic; in normal daylight the front lights are permanently on.<\/p>\n<p>But when it gets gloomier or darker front and rear lights come on.<\/p>\n<p>And if there&#8217;s nothing in front of me travelling in the same direction, and nothing coming in the opposite direction, the lights automatically go to full-beam.<\/p>\n<p>And back to dip again, when something is in front.<\/p>\n<p>The wipers are fully automatic.<\/p>\n<p>The sensors on the rear bumper activate a visual display and audio warning if my reverse parking is too tight.<\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m closing too quickly on the car in front, an audio and visual warning pops up.<\/p>\n<p>If I ignore these warnings, the car brakes itself!<\/p>\n<p>If I run low on fuel, the SatNav automatically offers to route me to the nearest open filling station.<\/p>\n<p>But for all these safety features &#8211; and more, that the car has &#8211; I have found one significant gap.<\/p>\n<p>The radio allows me to accidentally listen to Steve Wright in the Afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, with all that technology on board, you&#8217;d have thought the designers would have sorted that out, wouldn&#8217;t you?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12070\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12070\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12070\" src=\"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Good-grief-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Good grief\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Good-grief-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Good-grief-188x150.jpg 188w, https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Good-grief-150x120.jpg 150w, https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Good-grief.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Good grief<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like my new car.
