Yesterday at around 19.45 Mavis and I sat here (Mavis and her sibling Pugsley, by the way, were seven months old a few days ago) asleep next to me, snuggled up against my thigh. The dishwasher was loaded. Netflix was on pause. And in the far end of the house the 13yo was tearing into the second guitar solo section on ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ by The Darkness. The song is fast and the second solo is tricky and calls for some nimble fingers. She is, as the kids of today would say, shredding it. Tearing it apart. It’s quite something to hear. Three weeks ago she’d never heard of the song. Now she’s actually ripping it to bits (this is good). This a very talented 13yo who *never* practices. She was only practicing yesterday evening because her mother threatened her with some unmentionable thing such as tidy your bedroom, or similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When she’d finished with The Darkness she moved on to Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus. I do love the way she kicks in the distortion pedal and whams into the chorus… but I do wonder what the neighbours think of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Wheatus she took a hard run through Enter Sandman by Metallica, and that’s a major challenge for any amateur guitarist. She’s so gifted she can take on these very challenging guitar parts despite the fact *she never practices*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sickening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have to practice twice a day and I haven’t practiced for almost three weeks because there’s been someone else in the house. Anyway. I have to practice twice a day and I can’t pick up numbers or skills as rapidly as she does with her *never practicing*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Sandman she went on to another Metallica song: Master of Puppets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
