There are\u00c2\u00a0lots of good, bad, high and low events\u00c2\u00a0in the 2007 bunch of cnuts<\/strike> Big Brother inmates.<\/p>\n
But the saddest thing by far has been exposed by the requirement that housemates read aloud portions of\u00c2\u00a0text printed on cards.<\/p>\n
Sam and Tracey;\u00c2\u00a0they’re at the lowest end of literacy.<\/p>\n
Neither of them is a competent, confident, fluid reader.<\/p>\n
They stumble over the simplest words.<\/p>\n
They are unable to pronounce common words and phrases.<\/p>\n
And this, my friends, is the saddest thing about Big Brother 8.<\/p>\n
That our schools\u00c2\u00a0– and the teachers in those schools and the parents of these children who attend these schools\u00c2\u00a0– are happy to produce young adults to a standard of education that third-world countries surpased a decade ago.<\/p>\n
That’s the really sad thing about Big Brother 8.<\/p>\n
