{"id":15990,"date":"2025-09-26T11:02:25","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=15990"},"modified":"2025-09-24T11:03:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T10:03:00","slug":"microsoft-is-takin-the-pee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=15990","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft is takin&#8217; the pee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Well, Windows 10 is out of support in a couple of weeks and those of us with laptops which (Microsoft tells us) won&#8217;t run Windows 11 are faced with a couple of stark choices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bin the faithful and still fully functioning Windows 10 laptops and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy a new fully functioning Windows 11 laptop or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop using laptops and go to a Chromebook or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convert the faithful and still fully functioning Windows 10 laptop to Linux<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Number 4 attracts me like I&#8217;m a dizzy moth fluttering around a very bright flame. A GUI-version of Linux running LibreOffice would tick almost all of the boxes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I wouldn&#8217;t lose any of the multiple email accounts I run<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I wouldn&#8217;t lose any of the admin functions I run on multiple websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have my spreadsheets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have my documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have my presentations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have multiple browsers for account separation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have my VPN<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have FileZilla<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have my local and cloud-hosted databases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have YouTube for all my &#8216;how do I&#8230;&#8217; moments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d still have Audacity for audio editing stuff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d also still be able to run Spotify (though I am edging towards dumping it and going to qobuz)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So what would I lose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MS-Project (which I barely use any more anyway)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sony Vegas Pro 10 (which I do use &#8211; but Kdenlive on Linux is supposed to be a very good alternative)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmm. When one makes a list like this there&#8217;s actually very little rationale to staying within the clutches of Microsoft. But it&#8217;s the unknown. Not the <em>fear<\/em> of the unknown, as such &#8211; it&#8217;s the gulf of the unknown. I know Windows and all its little idiosyncrasies. I can fix Windows bugs, issues, and (ahem) &#8216;features&#8217;.
