It normally gets sent to the subscribers on the last day of the month, but this month’s edition went out yesterday (19th October 2026) for reasons. Except it nearly didn’t. Pull up a seat, dear reader, and I’ll tell you all about it.

Yesterday afternoon I’d written the first draft, saved it, then hit the ‘send test’ button, which I normally do when I’d like to see how the draft looks on various mobile devices and on a laptop. Except, immediately after I hit the ‘send test’ button, nothing happened. I neither received an acknowledgement (usually do) nor received an email (usually do).

So. obviously, I began peeling back the layers. The newsletter function was working perfectly, so I saved the draft newsletter and moved on to the SMTP mailout function. This *seemed* to be working fine but I treated the result with caution and moved on to the php mailer and there it was. A little puddle of nothing much to look at. Nope, it was all good. So I shifted back to the SMTP mailout, disabled it, built a new SMTP mailserver, added a mailout function from scratch, checked the outbound SMTP address (it was all good, obviously), loaded all the usual port and security gubbins into the new SMTP mailserver, loaded the newsletter function and recalled the saved draft, hit ‘send test’ and Robert was indeed your Mother’s Brother because I got the acknowledgement and received a test email.

The only possible cause that springs to mind is when I upgraded the core php to 8.2, somehow the mailout function on the SMTP server broke. Nothing was lost, nothing needed recovering from backups and, despite the breakdown, the logs were still intact. Maybe I need to build a new test routine after upgrading php versions?

I publish a monthly email newsletter for the campaign.
