{"id":173,"date":"2007-09-04T19:45:19","date_gmt":"2007-09-04T18:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=173"},"modified":"2012-05-05T00:04:07","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T23:04:07","slug":"accommodating-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=173","title":{"rendered":"Accommodating decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Decisions, choices.<\/p>\n<p>There are too many of them in this hyped-up, consumer-led world.<\/p>\n<p>For example; supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mean that there are too many brands of supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p>Or even that there are too many supermarket outlets.<\/p>\n<p>But you go inside the supermarket and boy is there too much choice!<\/p>\n<p>Want some washing-up liquid?<\/p>\n<p>How long have you got?<\/p>\n<p>Because over in aisle 13 we have four <em>rows<\/em> of washing-up liquid.<\/p>\n<p>And those are just the lemon, lime, banana, strawberry, mango and\/or orange flavoured products.<\/p>\n<p>Over in aisle 14 we have 9 types of 5 brands of Eco-washing-up liquid.<\/p>\n<p>Good grief.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, want some peas?<\/p>\n<p>In aisle 31 we have 18 types of 9 brands of <em>frozen<\/em> peas.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst over in aisle 33 we have 5 types of 31 brands of <em>tinned<\/em> peas.<\/p>\n<p>But back at the greengrocery counter we have a selection of <em>freshly grown<\/em> peas.<\/p>\n<p>Yet just around the corner at the <em>specialist<\/em> greengrocery we have a selection of <em>organically grown<\/em> fresh peas.<\/p>\n<p>Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the Spanish mountain village where I used to live, the &#8216;<em>supermercado&#8217;<\/em> shopper has two choices:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Do you want this one, or not?&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And life as a consumer was just so much simpler.<\/p>\n<p>So the thing that teases my brain as I cruise down the M5 in the early morning light this Tuesday, listening to the Chris Moyles &#8216;brand new cheesy song&#8217;&#8230; I have my own decisions.<\/p>\n<p>About where I&#8217;m going to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>You see, the place I&#8217;m working for the next few months is borderline commuting distance from home.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve been creeping home more frequently.<\/p>\n<p>To The Lovely S.<\/p>\n<p>To my own house.<\/p>\n<p>To my own bed.<\/p>\n<p>And when The Lovely S has been working late, I&#8217;ve been able to go straight to the yard to spend some quality time with the boys, tidy the lorry and then ride Vinnie.<\/p>\n<p>But the situation changes next week.<\/p>\n<p>The Lovely S will be away at a Welsh University, working on her MSc.<\/p>\n<p>So do I make the trip home every night next week?<\/p>\n<p>Distractions are well&#8230; distractions &#8211; whether the distractions are children&#8217;s toys or just &#8216;alien&#8217; noise.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t\u00c2\u00a0about &#8216;not commuting&#8217; or staying locally.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about being in my own environment &#8211; a place I know; not having a shared one.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about spending time with my own horses &#8211; force-feeding them apples (<em>ha!<\/em>) even if I choose not to\u00a0ride.<\/p>\n<p>And about choosing whether or not to cook pasta in <em>my<\/em> kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Where I know where the knives, forks and plates are.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As I read this back it looks as though the choice is making itself with very little input from me.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>But a whole week at home by myself?<\/p>\n<p>What will I get up to?<\/p>\n<p>ROFL!<br \/>\n<strong><em>B<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Decisions, choices.
