{"id":178,"date":"2007-09-07T18:53:43","date_gmt":"2007-09-07T17:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=178"},"modified":"2015-02-25T20:36:39","modified_gmt":"2015-02-25T20:36:39","slug":"writing-news-at-the-speed-of-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=178","title":{"rendered":"Writing news at the speed of light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An email flutters in.<\/p>\n<p>It tells me that \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc<em>Horse of a Different Colour<\/em>&#8216; has won another award: &#8216;<em>el mejor cuento extranjero<\/em>&#8216; (best foreign short story) as voted for by the readers of &#8216;<em>Tiempo<\/em>&#8216;, a literary magazine published in Mexico Distrito Federal.<\/p>\n<p>I have been invited to attend the award ceremony in December in Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly I shall have to decline but I have offered the publisher a webcam chat or &#8211; if the time zones work against us &#8211; a recorded interview.<\/p>\n<p>The amusing point about the prize is that the piece was put forward not as an English work but was presented to the publisher in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>But it is, if you&#8217;ve read it, clearly set in Spain, not in Mexico &#8211; hence the award.<\/p>\n<p>I hope they opt for the recorded interview; a live web-conference in the version of Spanish they speak in Mexico could, in retrospect, be way over my head.<\/p>\n<p>Of note: I entered <em>California Dreamin&#8217;<\/em> at the same time but at 3,500 votes it polled at less than half the number the winning piece attained &#8211; and was so far down the list of places as to be embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>Shame; I thought it <em>California Dreamin&#8217;<\/em> was the stronger piece of writing &#8211; much better descriptive narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps my translation was less good.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>B<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An email flutters in.
