This little baby, if you’re interested<\/a>.<\/p>\nAs well as the usual RAIDed, WiFi-enabled storage device, the NAS has a bunch of add-on functionality, which includes being able to host up to 30 websites, and act as a video-, photo- and music-server.<\/p>\n
I did set the NAS up a couple of weeks ago, and transferred my music library on to it via the console panel, but hit a network problem and, frankly, ran out of time to sit down and fix it.<\/p>\n
Last night I identified the problem; my antivirus’ firewall had been blocking the connection. Bastard.<\/p>\n
Half an hour of reading-up on categories and sub-categories of firewall rules later, and the problem has gone away.<\/p>\n
My laptop now connects to the NAS on boot-up, via mapped drives.<\/p>\n
And now, all of my video-editing projects, all of my audio-editing projects, all of my music and every single one of my data-files are sitting on the NAS.<\/p>\n
The NAS continually backs itself up; it has two 3TB internal disks, and it mirrors the data across both disks.<\/p>\n
I haven’t enabled remote access yet, but I probably will at some stage, when I’ve reassured myself that security is as robust as the manufacturers claim.<\/p>\n
I’ve just spent a massive amount of money (\u00a36.58) on a two-year domain which I will (eventually) host on the NAS.<\/p>\n
It’s going to be a messing-about, nothing serious, experimental home of technical mistakes and *cough* deliberate accidents.<\/p>\n
This evening, after syncing the laptop to the NAS one last time, I’ve done one final laptop backup to another external device and have…<\/p>\n
… deleted all of the data and media files on the laptop!<\/p>\n
Scary.<\/p>\n
But I’m well covered, if it goes tits up.<\/p>\n
Which it won’t, obv.<\/p>\n
And that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to for the last few hours.<\/p>\n
