I’ve spent so much of the last couple of week with my music collection.<\/p>\n
A little like the character Rob Gordon in Nick Hornby’s excellent novel ‘High Fidelity’, I’ve wrapped myself in my CDs (and mp3s, m4as, wma, flac and every other format known to man).<\/p>\n
What quickly struck me, as I considered alphabetising my music collection by life event, is that such a high number of the brilliant local\/unsigned bands I have been tracking over the years, have broken up.<\/p>\n
This is very sad.<\/p>\n
It means you will never get to hear the genius of Dial F for Frankenstein. You will never appreciate the painfully delicate beauty of The Winchell Riots. You, my poor deprived friend, will never be allowed to bask in the radiant glory of The Witches, as they perform – on stage – a range of breathtaking non-mainstream rock that was, is and always will be too good for commercial radio.<\/p>\n
And the BBC.<\/p>\n
No, instead you’ll get Take That reforming. And the Spice Girls reforming. And, well, who really cares who else reforms.<\/p>\n
The long and short of this sad and sorry tale is that you will have mediocre music thrust down your throats by a mainstream music industry that is dying before your eyes.<\/p>\n
Dying, because the actual market share of the mainstream music industry is diminishing, as self-producing independent musicians make their own way out to the public conscience.<\/p>\n
The irony does not escape many of us.<\/p>\n
So what I would like to do, if it is alright with you, is share – through the magic of internet streaming – a little taste of just some of the brilliance that appeared on-stage, produced excellent music and then burned out, like some briefly flaring musical sun going supernova.<\/p>\n
Fair enough?<\/p>\n
All you have to do is make a quiet space in your life, press ‘play’ and settle back in your chair, to appreciate something that, sadly, is no longer with us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
