{"id":8161,"date":"2012-08-22T20:03:48","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T19:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=8161"},"modified":"2012-08-27T21:19:28","modified_gmt":"2012-08-27T20:19:28","slug":"celebrating-the-passing-of-musical-friends-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=8161","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating the passing of musical friends #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I fell across <strong>The Razorbax<\/strong> in a grotty little rock venue in the centre of Birmingham, five-six years ago.<\/p>\n<p>It was a grim, sticky-floored, unpromising hall, with a damp, oppressive atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>As is all too common on these &#8216;pop in on spec&#8217; missions, I quickly developed a set of low expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The band straggled on to the stage and began their tune-up\/warm-up routine, which included just the opening bars of The Enemy&#8217;s &#8216;We&#8217;ll Live And Die In These Towns&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>That got my attention; I like that song! The opening was so faithfully delivered that I hoped we&#8217;d get an evening of decently performed covers.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Those few bars of &#8216;We&#8217;ll Live And Die&#8230;&#8217; were the only unoriginal work that The Razorbax delivered all evening.<\/p>\n<p>Their set-list was well planned.<\/p>\n<p>The band delivered a hyper fast opening, a slightly downbeat, yet highly melodic midsection, and they finished with a brilliant 4&#8217;21&#8221; of slow-burn-to-loud-and-fast-and-noisy-rock &#8211; in one track!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sad that The Razorbax are no more.<\/p>\n<p>Leigh Bucknall, the moving force behind the band, continues to write\u00a0aggressively melodic post-punk songs that describe living in sink towns, falling in love and having your heart broken.<\/p>\n<p>But The Razorbax are gone.<\/p>\n<p>It is entirely appropriate that I end this article with the same song that The Razorbax closed the first (but not the last!) gig of theirs I saw.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8216;Couldn&#8217;t Wait&#8217;, by The Razorbax.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F57104492\" \/><embed width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F57104492\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object> <span><a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/this-reality-podcast\/couldnt-wait\">Couldn&#8217;t Wait<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/this-reality-podcast\">This Reality Podcast<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I fell across The Razorbax in a grotty little rock venue in the centre of Birmingham, five-six years ago.
