Another equine post? So soon?<\/em><\/p>\n

Vin and I have put some time in with our JP-dictated canter exercises this week; today I thought we’d put a different slant on it, so the big orange boy and I went for a hack.<\/p>\n

We left the yard, toddled the half-mile up the track and crossed the ‘B’ road to…<\/p>\n

The all-weather racing gallops.<\/p>\n

Yay!<\/p>\n

The last time I took Vin to the gallops I made him trot the whole way up. In an outline. He ground his teeth at me but, bless him, did as he was asked – not even a single moment of disagreement.<\/p>\n

This time we trotted the first half-furlong and then I settled in the saddle, asked for a very slight flex and then asked for a left-lead canter.<\/p>\n

I’ll admit I was expecting an explosion of legs and a bit of a hairy few moments but the lovely lad just offered up what had been asked for.<\/p>\n

I collected him, sat in, collected a little more and put just a fraction of leg on to help with the balance and we performed a beautifully-paced (slow!), well-collected left-lead canter for nine furlongs.<\/p>\n

There were no arguments, he stayed soft, I was able to give the rein away every few yards and only retake a much lighter contact when I had to. It was beautiful.<\/p>\n

We had a couple of moments where birds flew out of the hedge and he star-fished (very disconcerting to be bowling along at 20-25mph when one’s horse does that!), but a gentle leg and a laugh from me got a swift recovery each time.<\/p>\n

When we got to the top we turned, left the track and walked down the lane, crossed the ‘B’ road and walked down the other lane in to the village, stopping (perfectly legally) to help ourselves to some of the contents of the fallen apples in the basket outside one of the houses.<\/p>\n

If Vin and I can keep working on and improving that left-lead canter we should be show-jumping by the end of January.<\/p>\n
