{"id":87,"date":"2007-07-16T11:21:22","date_gmt":"2007-07-16T10:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=87"},"modified":"2012-05-05T10:21:56","modified_gmt":"2012-05-05T09:21:56","slug":"film-review-perfume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=87","title":{"rendered":"Film review: Perfume"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t watch it while you&#8217;re eating.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, don&#8217;t watch it soon after you&#8217;ve eaten.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a rough, tough, unpleasantly gory start.<\/p>\n<p>But it gets better.<\/p>\n<p>And better.<\/p>\n<p>And better.<\/p>\n<p>Set in pre-revolution France <em>Perfume<\/em> is the story of a man with an extraordinary gift &#8211; the power to &#8216;divine&#8217; smells.<\/p>\n<p>In a time when open sewers ran through the streets and many of the population lived in total squalor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In a time when fresh, uncontaminated drinking\/washing water was as far out of reach of everyone on the planet as eradicating hunger is today&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The gift of scent and the ability to mask the unpleasantly odorous with something pleasant&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This would have been a gift greater than anyone of the time could have imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being gritty and treating the period with great realism, this is a beautiful film.<\/p>\n<p>The cinematography is brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>A moving portrait of shades, colours and hues.<\/p>\n<p>And, I think, homage to Stanley Kubrik.<\/p>\n<p>Was I imagining nods in the direction of <em>A Clockwork Orange<\/em> and <em>Barry Lyndon<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>The cast is underplayed, a strange thing to say with a cast as strong as this (Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman, Rachel Hurd-Wood and beautifully narrated by John Hurt).<\/p>\n<p>The locations are stunning.<\/p>\n<p>The story is stunningly woven.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of a German director, German producer and international cast have made something incredibly worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>An unusual subject, stunningly filmed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t watch it while you&#8217;re eating.
