I did a lot of motorway miles today, on the VFR.<\/p>\n
It was fun. I loved it.<\/p>\n
Except for the vast majority of other drivers.<\/p>\n
I didn’t love them. They weren’t fun.<\/p>\n
They were accidents just waiting to happen.<\/p>\n
I rode most of the journey in Lane 1.<\/p>\n
I undertook hundreds – yes, hundreds – of cars in Lane 2, Lane 3, and Lane 4.<\/p>\n
I undertook them legally, as defined in the Highway Code.<\/p>\n
But they were just sitting there, in Lane 2, or Lane 3, or Lane 4.<\/p>\n
Just sitting there in their own spaced-out little worlds.<\/p>\n
We really need to have a motorway driving test.<\/p>\n
And the police need to enforce lane discipline.<\/p>\n
I saw one three car pile up – it happened (on the opposite carriageway) in front of me – due, largely, to poor lane discipline and a lack of common sense.<\/p>\n
We’ll never teach common sense, but let’s have the driving public taught lane discipline.<\/p>\n
If our government really cared about saving motorists lives (and let’s remember that more motorists are killed on the country’s roads in a month than cyclists are killed on London’s roads in a year), they wouldn’t faff about saying they were going to raise the speed limit to 80mph (remember that – just a few months ago?) and then very quietly drop the idea when the road safety lobby said it was a terrible thought.<\/p>\n
No, if our government really cared about saving motorists lives, they’d force the immediate introduction of a stricter driving test that included a compulsory motorway section, and compulsory night-driving section, and compulsory eye-tests on the test-centre premises.<\/p>\n
And mandatory retesting.<\/p>\n
