{"id":99,"date":"2007-07-22T18:55:49","date_gmt":"2007-07-22T17:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=99"},"modified":"2012-05-05T10:25:26","modified_gmt":"2012-05-05T09:25:26","slug":"a-very-jumpy-pone%e2%80%a6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brennigjones.com\/blog\/?p=99","title":{"rendered":"A Very Jumpy Pone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Which sounds scarily like a Sooty episode but isn&#8217;t<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday evening I decided that Vin needed to have some jump schooling.<\/p>\n<p>Possible show jumping at Allenshill on Tuesday and a return there for some combined training next Sunday?<\/p>\n<p>Yep, definitely need to get some practice.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it for a while and decided to build three small, unrelated fences, on different lines in the arena.<\/p>\n<p>We know he can jump big.<\/p>\n<p>What we need to instil in him is his ability to jump from a slower, bouncier, more consistent rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>So that was going to be the aim of this batch of schooling: rhythm and consistency.<\/p>\n<p>But first the hard part prior to schooling.<\/p>\n<p>Getting out of bed.<\/p>\n<p>Crikey, that&#8217;s a hard one.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d served The Lovely S with breakfast in bed.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast in bed is fast becoming a regular feature in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>And then we settled down with our books.<\/p>\n<p>And read.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally stroked and fondled.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes paused for cuddles.<\/p>\n<p>And a brief snooze or two.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know when I got up but it was gone midday &#8211; The Lovely S had preceded me by at least half an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Showered, shaved, dressed and with both of us in the car, our first port of call was Bromsgrove.<\/p>\n<p>A pub.<\/p>\n<p>For lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it was lunchtime!<\/p>\n<p>Having eaten we walked up the High Street to Costa for a Hot Chocolate and no cake.<\/p>\n<p>How virtuous are we?<\/p>\n<p>Then I dropped The Lovely S at home.<\/p>\n<p>And made my way to the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Where I fed Beech some sliced apple, groomed him and generally loved him up.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s looking good, considering.<\/p>\n<p>No horse will maintain condition having been on box rest for three months and Beech (being a highly strung Thoroughbred) is quick to drop weight at the best of times.<\/p>\n<p>But he&#8217;s really not doing too badly.<\/p>\n<p>Down at the field Vin was thrilled to see me; I opened the gate and he walked out, put his nose in the headcollar and said &#8216;hello&#8217; the way he does.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, I&#8217;m now wearing a green polo-shirt, not a white one.<\/p>\n<p>He was easy to groom and stood patiently while I fannied about tacking him up and then building a small course of jumps in the arena.<\/p>\n<p>With that lot finished and me on board, we worked on the flat for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of transitions to get his bum underneath him, relax his back and get his head working.<\/p>\n<p>And then for the next 20 minutes we worked on our exercise:<br \/>\nOne fence repeatedly on laps of the arena to establish rhythm. Then change the rein to achieve the same standard in the opposite direction.<br \/>\nThen two fences repeatedly on laps of the arena to establish&#8230;  you get it I&#8217;m sure. Then change the rein.<br \/>\nThen three fences as a small course still concentrating on maintaining our rhythm, then change the rein to get the same effect&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes of low-level jump schooling.<\/p>\n<p>When I dismounted I was covered in perspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Vin, I&#8217;m glad to say,\u00c2\u00a0was hardly sweating.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s a big, strong, fit boy.<\/p>\n<p>With him groomed, fed tea, rugged up and turned back out (and me hot chocolated) it was time to return home.<\/p>\n<p>In my absence the Lovely S had done a load of ironing.<\/p>\n<p>And prepared tea.<\/p>\n<p>And was about to serve it.<\/p>\n<p>Spag Bol!<\/p>\n<p>How excellent.<\/p>\n<p>Since then I&#8217;ve washed up, dried up and put away.<\/p>\n<p>I feel replete.<\/p>\n<p>And complete.<\/p>\n<p>And effete.<\/p>\n<p>And very smiley.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which sounds scarily like a Sooty episode but isn&#8217;t On Saturday evening I decided that Vin needed to have some jump schooling.
