Tech braindump

I’ve been updating this blog, in a behind the scenes kind of way. I’ve also been carrying out some overdue database admin and upgrades to stuff like the php. And I’ve been thinking about the structure of the blog content. I’ve recently condensed the many post categories down to two. Lately I’ve been thinking that even two might be too many but, for personal reasons, I want to keep a tag on the sailing stuff. So one school of thought is that I hive off all the sailing/Good Mood content off to a dedicated sub-blog; that would give me an platform from which to keep track of the stuff that I need to write up into the ship’s log. I tend not to write up day-sailing entries *on the day*. And that reminds me, I haven’t even blogged last Thursday’s passage yet.

Also, the hosting agreement is due for renewal in a month or so. Since the start of this year I’ve gradually been shedding all the websites I’ve been hosting/working on for other people. Now I’m down to just two, and I might let my geekblog go, now I’m no longer doing actual geek stuff any longer. If I did, it would just mean hosting this domain and the sub that this blog runs in. These reductions mean I could shop around for a new hosting arrangement. I could, of course, host the domain and sub on the NAS. I’ve successfully done this in the past, and it worked quite well. I stopped hosting on the NAS when the number of domains and websites grew, as I took on hosting work for other people/organisations. But now they’ve all gone…

We recently upgraded our bandwidth. Even though we’ve only got copper to the house, we switched providers from Vodafone to TalkTalk and, in switching, we managed to upgrade our broadband from 75Mb/s download to 155Mb/s download. Needless to say I’ll be keeping an eye on the download speed to ensure it keeps at the level we’re paying for.

And, ending a 25-year relationship, I’ve switched my mobile phone to a GiffGaff SIM-only deal which is three times cheaper than Vodafone, yet gives me significantly higher download limits. I’ve got another mobile device that I want to take away from Vodafone but they’ve completely cocked things up their end, and even talking to them about them sorting out their horrible cockup is an ordeal and I just don’t have the mental energy for that battle this week.

  1. Oh, I assumed this site was still hosted on the NAS under your stairs… or was it by the door?
Anyway, it’s good to have a sort out, occasionally.
I need to do the same… with so, so many things..

    1. I moved it a couple of years ago when I switched to Vodafone Home Broadband. Navigating their router config to set up internal hosting was most difficult. What sort of a sort out do you have in your sights?

  2. Everything!
Every year, I promise that I will sort out the loft… and I never do. It’s ridiculous up there… I’d need to get a skip, really.
My radio shack / playroom is in a constant state of disarray and desperately needs sorting (I still haven’t found that Kindle, but it has to be in here, somewhere).
And the garage has gone to the top of the priority list, as my son has just passed his CBT and we are going to look at a 125 for him this weekend. Currently, there is no chance of getting it in there.
Then there’s my health; finances; life in general…
