Under the hammer

This evening we trogged down the Old A40 to a car auction in Witney (hat tip to Perpetual Spiral for telling me the place was worth a visit).

There was a full list and I’d marked a few cars I was vaguely (!) interested in from the auctioneers website, so off we set – purely in the interests of market research – for a look at what’s what.

Sadly there weren’t very many Quality cars (that’s quality with a capital Q):

The November 2000 Jaguar S-Type V6 SE went for a provisional £3,000.
The September 2003 Toyota Celica VVTI went for £2,950
The July 2004 Honda Accord Vtec Executive went for £3,300

At the other end of the market…

The November 2004 Ford Focus went for£1,050
The September 2005 Vauxhall Astra CDTI went for £2,700
The immaculate June 2003 Nissan X-Trail Sport TD went for £3,300
The June 2006 BMW X5 D Auto went for £8,050

But apart from the mundane business of watching an auction in process (I just can’t get excited by auctions – not unless the auction in question is Ascot Bloodstock Sales where, when I attend, you’ll usually find me sitting on both of my hands in order to prevent me from going home with a stableful of unplanned horses following by transport!) it was a useful exercise in helping me understand the auction value of the more common types of cars.

What I need is to go a few more times to try and get the values of Jaguars, Mercedes and BMWs. Just in the interest of market research of course!

  1. The trick is definitely to go a few times. They do get a lot of stock coming through from dealers in the area so over the course of a few weeks a wide and varied selection comes through.

A well thumbed Glasses guide also helps you blend in a little too 🙂

(By the way, it may just be me, but your feeds for both posts and comments doesn’t appear to be working)

  2. Aye, I’ll definitely be watching their stocklists on the website and nipping down there where there are a few vehicles that catch my eye. The Jag was a tempter but I kept my hands in my pockets.

Thanks for the tip about the RSS feeds. My host performed a server upgrade over the weekend and since then I’ve noticed sporadic issues; I’ll follow this up.
