Dear Coalition for Marriage,
Thank you for putting your leaflet ‘Witney For Marriage’ through my letter box.
I have read the contents thoroughly, and consider myself to be better educated.
I was unaware that this issue – the redefinition of marriage, to allow homosexuals/lesbians to become legally ‘married’ – was such a contentious one.
I am in complete agreement that we must let our MP (the Right Honourable David Cameron) know how strongly we feel about his policy of allowing homosexuals/lesbians to become married.
Therefore I shall be writing to his office, with immediate effect, imploring him to throw his full weight behind this change.
It is scandalous that petty-minded folk feel they have a right to maintain the province of ‘marriage’ as a state exclusive to heterosexuals.
I do thank you for your leaflet.
If you had not distributed it to me I would not have had sight of such scare-mongeringly ignorant and unchallenged statements such as:
- Although death and divorce may prevent it, *the evidence shows* that children do best with a married mother and father (my emphasis; evidence?)
- Many gay people oppose redefining marriage (evidence? definition of ‘many’?)
- It will have a big impact on schools (evidence?)
- People will be punished for believing in traditional marriage (evidence?)
- If marriage is redefined once, what is to stop it being redefined to allow polygamy? (I’m still laughing about this one)
- In Spain, after they redefined marriage, overall marriage rates plummeted (but marriage rates in Spain have been plummeting for the last 50 years, haven’t they?)
So once again, thank you for your leaflet, and thank you for galvanising me to write to my MP, urging him to continue his good work on this policy, to bring forward a 21st Century redefinition of the word ‘marriage’.
Yours, very sincerely,
A better-educated person.
