The lease, on this house, is due for renewal/expires in two months.
I could just roll it over for another year.
Or I could move.
As much as I enjoy living here, the People’s Republic of Witney has one significant drawback.
The total absence of a train line.
Some local folk say that a decent MP would have fixed this, especially if he were in a position of supreme power such as, for example, holding the position of Prime Minister. I couldn’t possibly comment.
So yes, back to moving.
I spent last night on Rightmove, TheTrainLine and Google Maps.
Banbury (which is still in Oxfordshire, but only just) seems to have a good train service. And the town is on the motorway network.
Milton Keynes also ticks the train service box, and has reasonable access to the motorway system.
The wider question is, more practical.
Can I do it? Can I view properties, go through the admin and move from here to there in, effectively, less than six weeks?
Can I?
Especially given the other dynamics in my world?
Are you renting via an agency? You don’t actually have to renew the tenancy for another 12 months – agencies like you to do it, because they get all the associated fees, but if your landlord is happy for you to stay on for a bit, your assured shorthold tenancy becomes something called a statutory periodic tenancy with no extra paperwork needed from either of you. Your tenancy continues from one rent period to the next on the same terms as the AST until you either give notice to leave, the landlord gives you notice to leave or a new AST is created. So you could take a few months to shop around.
Hi Caroline. Yes I am. And thank you so much for this info. That’s wonderfully helpful.
As Caroline says, you don’t have to renew for a new period. This means you can take your time.
Might be worth looking at Bicester area too.
A change might do you good Bren, maybe it is time to move on from the Witney chapter of your life?
Yeah, I think you’re right. I love this house and I like the area, but maybe the time has come to look elsewhere. I need a train line. And a good road. And access to a motorway. And as we both know far too well, Witney has none of these!
Like Perp, I was going to suggest that you make the move. Hard work, but let’s face it: Witney hasn’t given you the fondest of memories over the years.
Cheers, Sir M. I’m considering Banbury, Bicester and MK. I don’t want to be too far from a trainline or a motorway, for commuting to work reasons. And the new Bandit is going to be hungry for tarmac…
🙂
Oh, but not MK — isn’t it a bit soulless? Banbury is nice: imagine living in a town in a nursery rhyme. As a non-driver (so, so not like you!) transport links are amongst the deal-breakers when I’m house-hunting. It just makes life so much easier, and I can cope with living in a rather less naice area for ease of getting around. As at the moment, when my road seems to be a drunk smack-head high road. But I’m 5 minutes from John Lewis.
Good luck with the house hunting. It’s a funny mix of exciting and god-awful tedium.
Thanks Kate. Rugby has also been added to the list.
