Blogathon 23/21: Renewables

I’ve just done the annual renewal of the caravan insurance. And I’ve just done the annual renewal of our membership of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. I shall shortly be renewing our annual caravan storage fee. I just hope that we get to use the caravan. The year before last (and it seems so much longer than that) we booked a return visit to the place in Cornwall that we stayed at the previous year.

Hang on, that looks like a real mess of a sentence. I’ll try again with more words.

In 2019 we stayed at a place in Cornwall. It was terrific, we all thought it was great, and baby Robyn loved it too. So we got home, had a cup of tea and a chat about it, and decided we wanted to go again. So we booked a return visit and paid a generous deposit for the following year. But the following year was 2020 and 2020 didn’t happen due to lockdown v1.0, so we called them up and transferred the booking and the deposit to the following-following year – to 2021. To this year.

Coincidentally, I’ve just renewed Robyn’s insurance. However…

If lockdown v3.0 is eased nationally, and if we feel comfortable within the eased lockdown, and if, as a family unit, we feel happy with the precautions that the place in Cornwall say they will be taking, then we may go ahead and take up the booking. But the word ‘if’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. We’ve only paid a deposit so we could walk away from the booked holiday, if we don’t feel that we would be safe or comfortable.

No worries.

But I do wonder if this is the life we have in front of us. Is this the new normal? Are these the kinds of decisions that we will have to make on a regular basis, from now on?

  1. TMM has just seen on her online banking that the people we are booked with to go to the Greek Islands for a family wedding, delayed as per yours above, have just taken £1600 for the balance of a holiday which is already fully paid for. She has left a message, we are awaiting their return call, they do not have long before she rings again. They really don’t want that to happen!
