Gymrat

I have joined a gym.

While you pick yourselves up off the floor, let me fill in some of the blanks. The gym is over in Colwick which isn’t terribly close but takes about 30 minutes to get there. The gym is open 24/7 so when I have bouts of insomnia, I can just drag myself out of bed and punish myself. Like I did this morning (I was there at 04.00). The gym is new(ish), very clean, is spacious, well laid-out, and has a good range of equipment. I’ve been going for a few weeks (except for the time in Scotland and York). I’m aiming for 3-4 visits a week, likely to be Sunday evening, Tuesday, Thursday, and maybe another day. I plan on swimming on the days I’m not gyming.

Stay tuned for details of how I fail to live up to my expectations.

  1. I joined a gym in the middle of 2024. I quit when my frozen shoulder made itself well and truly known. That was September. Common wisdom (is that an oxymoron?) says it’ll fully sort itself out after 1-3 years. It’s actually pretty decent at almost one year, but certainly still not healed.

Meanwhile, I have a holiday in Singapore and Japan coming up at the end of next week. I had to increase my walking because my son was moving house (he needed my towbar, and it’s attached to my car). I got three days in a row averaging over 10km a day. Then caught cold and have hardly moved for four days.

Except just now when I had to race to… no, TMI.

Let’s see how my general fitness is when I get there. Not as good as I would have hoped, I expect.

    1. Well that trip sounds marvellous! I hope you enjoy every single moment (frozen, slightly thawed, or defrosted shower notwithstanding). As for walking, I’m averaging just over 3k miles a year. Have spaniels, will walk.

  2. I go to the gym four times a week.

They say I can drop down to just twice a week, when the other cleaner comes back from maternity leave.
