Blogathon 16/26: Serviced

Today our central heating boiler was serviced. It’s just the annual thing, it’s still under warranty from when it was installed in January 2020. The installer (Charlie) used to service it, but he retired last year so, for almost exactly the same amount of money, a proper company has taken over the care and maintenance of it. When you think about it, a ten-year warranty is pretty good going for any piece of kit in this day and age. The “infotainment” centre on my car packed up when it was 3yo and the car had come straight from the factory to me, but Vauxhall made me pay their extortionate fee for a new one. I’m still smarting about that horrendous cost. That’ll teach me to have maps and music in my car, eh? Tsk.

  1. Our boiler came with a 5 year warranty, but when something went wrong with it, they not only fixed it but also gave us an extra 5 year warranty on top. I think it was a fuck up on their part, but I wasn’t going to complain.
The boiler is now just over 10 years-old, so the (extended) warranty has expired, but I still have it serviced annually – only seventy quid a pop – for peace of mind.
Modern boilers seem a bit snowflaky and need regular servicing else they’ll fail just when you need ’em. Our old boiler went for 26 years without being serviced and never had a single issue. Mind you, it was almost twice the size and was built like a tank.

    1. I am impressed we’ve both stepped carefully negotiated the minefield of all references to “the old boiler” in an incriminating way. Well done to us.
