After the explosion in microblogging which laid a lot of the millions of bloggers to rest, blogging is once again making a comeback. But all is not well in the new land of blogging, it appears. The trendy thing is to have a blog on ‘Substack’. It’s easy to set up, the bloggers can (if they wish) monetise their content and that enables Substack to take a cut for their costs, and everything’s just fine and dandy. Except it isn’t. Substack, it transpires, isn’t choosy. Racists, sexists, misogynists, fascists, Substack welcomes them all.
Freedom of speech is one thing, but using a platform which not only allows views like that, but actually takes a cut from the promoters of such content? Well, that’s something else, and it’s something I am unable to support. I have instituted a block on my social media. Anything with the word ‘Substack’ in it gets automatically binned before it gets to my eyes; it doesn’t matter who the blogger is, I just don’t see their words any longer. Sad, but necessary.
I follow a couple of people (actually, three) who have switched to Substack… and I hate them for it.
It’s a pain. You have to register with Substack if you wish to comment on a blog.
And the way it shows the comments seems somewhat random, as well.
I don’t know about the other stuff you mention, but in my eyes, Substack is rubbish.
