In a couple of weeks, in Austin, Texas, the South by South West Music Festival will kick off.
I plan on being there.
I have a commission from the Guardian.
I will be slutting myself around, trying to pick up additional commissions from other print, web, video and/or audio outlets…
And I will be there.
Just so you know.
O. K. It’s worked, I’m jealous. I rarely have any inclination to go to a festival, well not in the uk since that invariably seems to involve mud and discomfort. South by South West has always seemed like a bit of a magnet, even a little exotic, although I’m not sure Austin can ever be thought of as exotic.
I’ll let you know. I need to sort out papers because technically I’m working. Nightmare!
Fair doos Bren, that is very impressive.
You are now a proper, official media tart!
Looking forward to reading this already.
It’s true, I am a media tart. And also a tart.
I’ve always wanted to go there. Im jealous, good work 🙂
Awww. But you’re down there in Oz having a whale of a time. Or a dolphin of a time, I forget which. Are you ever planning on returning to the Land of the Fee?
Having a commission from The Guardian… does that mean you can turn your spell-checker off?
My spel chequer is always turned Orf.
Great going. I hope you have an amazing time. 🙂
Thank you, lovely. xx
Austin! One of my favourite US cities. I’ve had work reasons to spend quite a bit of time there on fellowships, and it’s lovely (well, outside of May to September, when it’s too darn hot).
Really easy-going and quite cosmopolitan for Texas. I once overheard the most hilarious conversation by two earnest graduate students on the drag (Guadalupe street — nearest thing to Camden but really it ISN’T) which compared Austin to New York. Impossible not to snigger, but for Texas, Austin is cool. Sort-of. Well, it’s where Wholefoods started (I remember the tiny shop at the other end of 6th street).
A colleague took me to the diner (a little way out of town) where Janis Joplin started singing when she was 16, and I ate grits and cornbread and collard greens.
Ahhhhh (any room in your suitcase?).
Keep Austin weird/Hook ’em., Horns/ whatever
My best friend lived in Dallas for 10 years. She’s given me quite a few leads to follow up. But the festival is packed. Some of the gigs don’t finish until midnight, and the talks/presentations begin at 9am. I’m not too sure I will get any time to follow things up in the wider Austin. Always room in my suitcase for an attractive lady. 🙂
