Music Challenge: Day 00/2016

It occurred to me, while I was driving to Birmingham for a meeting, recently (because let’s face it, driving to Birmingham is a harrowing enough experience, so you’re going to fill your head with lots of randomly pleasant, music-related thoughts, right?), that there are a number of ways that this particular cat (challenge) could get skinned.

I could, for example, choose to focus many of my responses to these daily challenges on my all-time favourite album, couldn’t I?

But that’s not the point, really, is it?

As much as I would like to share the entire contents of ‘Now That’s What I Call Music #714 (The Vocal Synthesiser Wars)’, it goes against the spirit of this little challenge to be so narrowly focussed.

Against the spirit?

Well in that case, what is the spirit?

For me, this is all about the goodness of music, balanced with a desire to breathe new life in to my blogging.

On the music front, it’s about attempting to share Faithless’ stunning track ‘Insomnia’ can wring from me similar feelings to ‘You Don’t Know Me At All’ by Don Henley.

Two stunningly different musical works.

And both evoke similar feelings as ‘Swords of a Thousand Men’ by Tenpole Tudor.

Or attempting to explain how ‘Erase/Rewind’ by The Cardigans can almost make me feel the same as ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ by Morrissey.

Or trying to explain the depth of raw feeling that occurred the first time I heard Eminem’s ‘Stan’, that I had to pull over to the side of the road, because it was like an injected hit of musicaine straight in to my heart.

It’s not so much about the similarities.

It’s about the differences, and how those differences can make me feel the same things.

And to add the icing to the cake of musical goodness, this list will be compiled on separate days.

This means that my moods are influencers on the list.

The track that makes me laugh today might not be the track that made me laugh yesterday.

And so on.

So hi there!

Welcome to my version of the 30-day music challenge.

If nothing else, I hope you click on a link and listen to something, and that you (un/expectedly) enjoy it.

And if you are joining in this music blogging challenge, then let me know, so I can look at what moves you.

OK?

Dave’s joining in! So too is young Masher (probably).

Anyway, here’s the full (updated) list that I’m going to be working to:

A song that makes me happy
A song that makes me sad
A song that reminds me of someone
A song that reminds me of somewhere
A song that reminds me of an event
A song that I know all the words to
A song that I can dance to
A song that makes me fall asleep
A song that fits my personality
A song from a band that I hate
A song that is a guilty pleasure
A song that no-one would expect me to love
A song that I used to love but now hate
A song that I hear too often on the radio
A song that I wish I heard more often on the radio
A song from a favourite album
A song that I listen to when I’m angry
A song that I listen to when I’m happy
A song that I listen to when I’m sad
A song that I want played at my wedding
A song that I want played at my funeral
A song that makes me laugh
A song that I can play on an instrument
A song that I wish I could play on an instrument
A song from my childhood
A song I would give to my offspring
A song to listen to at the end of a tough day
My favourite song from the last decade
My all-time favourite song
A song I’ve heard from someone else, that I like

  1. Hello, everything has shifted by a day with a new day 30 and Day 1 not being the intro, unless I copied and pasted the original wrong. Still, not a problem.

It will be interesting to see if there are any points of contact between our two lists or indeed of others who might join in.

    1. I’m occasionally guided by the views of others, and that’s why the date shift and extra day challenge happened in this instance.

It will be interesting. I think my choices are likely to be more mainstream than I first thought they might be. But I’m looking forward to it. And slightly fearful 😀

  2. Have we started already?

Well, I will give this a bit of a go, but looking at that list, I very much doubt I’ll be able to post daily. Actually, I KNOW I won’t.

But, we’ll see what it throws up.

Right, now where did I put that Winnie Atwell Long Player…?

    1. I’m setting up my record player as we speak. I couldn’t find the handle for my cylinder player
