Number Five of my Top Five Christmas Films
5. Home Alone
Not a big fan of Macauly Culkin’s work?
Me neither.
But Home Alone successfully gets me over that hurdle, to the point where I can almost forget about how much I don’t like Mr Culkin in this role and, instead, get to feel comfortable with how much I enjoy the film.
I’ll start with the family rushing around so much that they manage to leave one of their children at home.
This is brilliant.
Which of us haven’t wanted, secretly, to leave someone at home?
Aha, I see you have!
Me too.
Home Alone mines a rich, slightly dark vein of slapstick, and yet it doesn’t stray too readily in to the territory of gloop.
Perhaps that’s because of my dislike for Macauly Culkin?
Whatever.
The character Kevin isn’t a sociopath, as some have said.
He’s just a childish version of what I’d get up to, if I had the house to myseslf.
And then the burglars enter the story.
Ah! One I’ve seen. This is high on the watching list of the Magnificent M’s daughters. Even though they are just entering their 30’s.
I share your lack of enthusiasm for Mr Caulkin, although I didn’t mind Uncle Buck either.
I agree with you. Uncle Buck is an odd little film, but very enjoyable.
