I’ve been working on documenting my family tree for about three years. It’s been, frankly, one step forward, one step back except for the times when it’s been two steps forward, two steps back. Why is it proving so tricky? Records are less than reliable and where they do exist the writing has been very difficult to decipher. Cursive writing is a terrible thing when the penmanship is wonky in the first place. Yes, it looks pretty, but is it readable? I can only take 10 minutes of trying to read this then I need to have a break.

Another point is because those were less ‘official’ times and bureaucracy hadn’t been invented yet, people seemed to switch their names (fore and sur) when they wanted.
Lucky for you that Jones is such a rare name in Wales.
It doesn’t help that some of my female ancestors had the surname Jones before they married a Jones.
