The greatest anti-war film ever made is Saving Private Ryan and I will accept no arguments on this. The first 35 minutes which graphically show the slaughter on the beach is harrowing. But the relentlessness of the final action scene (with Private Ryan, on the bridge) drives the point home. The point, obviously, isn’t the futility of armed conflict (the film artfully stays away from moralising), it’s the relentlessness of it; the cost of human lives to secure a bridge. Brutal.
