Our bin collection is Friday mornings. Week 1 it’s the grey (household) bin. Week 2 it’s the blue (recycling bin) and the green (garden waste) bin. Week 3 it’s the grey (household) AND the purple glass recycling bin. Week 4 brings us back to the blue (recycling) bin and the green (garden waste) bin, and so on, ad infinitum.
For the last I don’t know how many years, on the evening before recycling collection, I’ve got a step-ladder out, climbed up it, and stepped into the recycling bin and stomped about as if I was treading grapes in the Loire valley. Why? Because we are heavy recyclers. We regularly generate 1-1/2 bin-worth of recycling material. Less general waste than a lot of people, but more recycling than a lot of people.
Well, all that has changed. No longer will I be climbing a step-ladder to stomp about in the already full recycling bin. Why’s that (I hear you ask)? Well, we now have a second recycling bin! The joy, last week, when I put out 2 blue recycling bins was indescribable. One bin was full, the other was half-full. Yes indeed, we have found recycling bin nirvana here. And our little bit of the world is a better place for it.
Funnily enough, I was looking at our recycling bin last night: it’s already nearly full and it’s not due for collection till Friday… or maybe Saturday. Sometimes Sunday. It all depends on the whim of the dustmen.
Our glass collection box is almost full too, thanks to them walking right past it last week.
The new blue waste food bin does seem to be getting emptied regularly, at least.
The brown bin (garden waste) has only been emptied twice this year, as the grass didn’t really grow much during the Summer. As I pay the council fifty quid a year for that to be taken way, it currently works out to 25 sovs each time it has been emptied. Ridiculous.
Anyway, well done on your recycling efforts.
