15 hours or 15 minutes

It’s 22.55 and that’s how long I’ve been asleep – 15 hours or 15 minutes.

We came to bed, the lovely S and I, to watch a film – Donnie Darko.

She loves it.

It’s good but, you know, not a classic.

But not bad – he said quickly, in an effort to remain on speaking terms with this lovely woman.

And with the film watched, the television and DVD were switched off; she fought me for access to some small part of the bed and lost.

But eventually I acquiesced and granted her access.

The light went off, we spooned.

I slept; longly deeply but lightly.

And was disturbed in my sleep when she got up.

After a few moments I followed her downstairs, she was making a cup of tea.

The clock said I had been asleep less than half an hour but I feel rested and not the least bit tired – a real power-nap was had.

And now, 22.58, we’re both in bed, laptops whirring gently, mugs of tea on the bedside tables.

The lovely S’s curiosity about the soundtrack to Donnie Darko and other films satisfied via quick visits to the iTunes store.

And I wonder if I’ll be able to go back to sleep tonight.

  1. Define “classical” before speaking ill of Donnie Darko, for the sake of you, Brennig!

  2. Despina: Indeed it does.

Citronella: Oh no, I liked the exposure of small-minded American bigotry where classic English author Graham Greene somehow metamorphoses inside the complainants pin-like head in to Lorne Greene the actor from the TV series Bonanza.

I also loved the way the uncomfortable relationship was exposed – the gap between the religious far right in the US educational system and those whose minds are willing to explore other ideas.

The film also tangentially explores wormhole theoretical metaphysics as notably explored by Professor Stephen Hawking; interesting in itself.

    It just isn’t a classic, that’s all.

    Classic in my view:
    * Groundhog Day (observational, witty, funny, dark overtones)
    * Intacto (brooding, dark, psychological)
    * It’s a Wonderful Life (funny, warm, slightly dark)
    * Picnic at Hanging Rock (brooding, dark, psychological)
    * A Matter of Life and Death (warm, slightly dark)
    * Life of Brian (warm, observational, funny: just the kind of film the religious right should be forced to watch once a week).

  3. I actually hated Donnie Darko.

I wanted to slap Donnie all the way through.

    SUCH an irritating character.

  4. I no longer like you in any way!

How could you hate Donnie Darko (both character and film?!)

I feel as though my world is collapsing around me…I thought we were kindred souls. I thought we were each other.

Now I don’t even know what is right or wrong anymore…And now Bren is agreeing with you in my ear.

I need to go and sit in a darkened room and rock.

  5. Please don’t hate me Soph. It’ll make my love for you unrequited, and that’s just not nice 🙁

  6. Ginny: She doesn’t. She was just a little shocked that someone as gorgeous as you (i.e. you) could have views on a film so similar to someone ungorgeous (me). 🙂
