Hot here!

We have made it to Las Vegas.

Without killing anyone.

I know!

How unexpected is that?

Very, obv.

The drive through the desert was hot, cold, interesting and boring all at the same time.

Hot outside; hot enough to fry an egg on the roof of a bald traffic cop.

Cold inside; with the air con working full-time in the car.

Interesting to see the natural shapes in the desert.

click twice for the big pic - there's snow!

Boring because, after three hours, those shapes all start to look the same.

We did have a very quick pitstop at Edwards AFB, to say hello to an old friend.

The last time I was at Edwards we flew in under the cover of darkness, worked like hell while we were there and, to add insult to injury, our CO wouldn’t let us leave leave the camp.

It was a bit weird to see the front of the place, this time.

Anyway, Vegas.

We’re trying to organise visits, trips and stuff, so we’re going to be busy for the next hour or so.

Oh, if you want an audio experience of the most recent leg of the journey, can I suggest that you have a listen to This Reality Podcast #165.

There’s lots of audio segments recorded between Monterey and Mariposa.

Some of it actually interesting.

I know!

Who’da thort it?

  1. Clare, the only exception to the ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ rule is VD.

Mooster, we have lots of photos and miles of video footage. It all needs sorting out now. We’ll get around to it.

The Factory, if you’re doing the full round-California drive that we did you need to get a car with a meaty engine. The mountains in Yosemite play havoc with automatic transmissions and it’s best if you’ve got lots of cylinders to cope with the demand. We booked accommodation for the night on the morning of the same day – expedia.co.uk came up trumps for price and quality and found us many five-star places to stay for two-star prices. I particularly recommend Padre Hotel in Bakersfield, where we scored an awesomely sumptuous room for £70 per night, and Monte Carlo hotel in Vegas where we scored a massive suite for £90 per night.
