The other side to the weekend

The other side to the weekend was spent fixing my bloody iPod.

Mid-week it stopped behaving as it should.

The registry/index somehow broke down; when I sync’d it to iTunes the iTunes display told me fibs (namely that the 30Gb iPod was full).

But when I tried to navigate away from the central iPod page in iTunes the display froze and only a CTL-ALT-DEL and ‘stop iTunes process’ would give me back control of my laptop.

Bloody thing.

I tried multiple resyncs and they all returned the same results.

I manually rebooted the iPod but that didn’t get me anywhere.

So I protected the 5Gb of music and 10Gb of data files I keep on my iPod and then tried to restore the thing to factory default settings.

Tried to.

Yep, every time I plugged it in it did the ‘resyncing’ thing and then froze and there was no way to over-ride it.

So I opened an explorer session on to the iPod, took a deep breath and deleted the control directory.

Then I fired up iTunes and guess what?

Straight away it started presenting me with ‘Oh-oh, Something’s Really Fucked Around Here!’ error messages.

And then it got on with the business of resetting itself to factory defaults.

That didn’t take long at all, but then it started importing the previous iTunes contents.

That took several hours!

But the whole programme of processes worked.

My iTunes is healthy, my iPod is healthy and the world is sweetness and light once more.

Yay!

Total processing time expended on iPod reconfiguration: 27 hours.

But it’s back up and running so I’m not going to complain too loudly.

  1. That sounds very odd. Mine goes funny every so often but it never behaves as badly as that. Is it new? Perhaps it’s faulty?

  2. Two or so years old I guess. I’m forgiving it though, it’s never had a problem before. 🙂

  3. Ah well. That’s not too bad. I have one of the Old Skool 60GB photo-pods and I love it! It’s so reliable!
