Blogathon 23/22: Old school info

It’s a charming C21st anachronism that BT are still sending out hardcopy telephone directories. The one that rattled through the letterbox this morning (and well done to BT for producing something that fits through the average letterbox) is a combination business and residential directory.

But the thing I’d like to point out is the colloquial phrasing. ‘Ey up me duck’ is a phrase that is about as Nottinghamshire as it comes. Fair enough, a bit of localisation is quite cute. But I do wonder how phone books in other areas of the UK will be flavoured.

Will we see ‘Alright butt’ in South West Wales? ‘Awa’ an bile yer heid’ in Glasgae? ‘Are you aving a giraffe’? in that London? and ‘Alright my luvver’ in the West Country?

So if you’ve got a local BT phone directory, feel free to let me know what the salutation on the front cover is. I’m intrugued!

    1. Wait a minute. Does the fact that you are a Virgin mean that you don’t appear in the phone book? And/or does the fact that you are a Virgin mean that you don’t get a phone book? Or you don’t get an entry in the BT phone book (that kinda makes sense the more I look at it). But here’s a thing. We don’t have BT phone or internet services. And yet we have been given a BT phone directory. We aren’t listed because we are ex-d. But why would BT send us a BT phone directory when we’re not BT subscribers? Blimey, this is confusing.
