Blogathon 07/26: Radio Gaga

When I’m working, whether it’s campaign stuff (of which more at a later date), writing, reading, doing housework, or whatever else I get upto, I tend to listen to the radio. I switch around depending on my mood. Classic FM, Greatest Hits Radio (aka Radio 2-ish), and Capital are my most-listened to products. The downside of them all is they’re commercial radio stations, but that’s a small price to pay for listening to a range of music I enjoy.

Well.

There’s another downside.

The commercials tend to be a bit bonkers and by that I mean the targeting frequently goes awry. Just yesterday an advert popped up on Greatest Hits Radio which advised me to nip down to Bicester Village because (and I quote), “it’s just a short drive away”.

What? Has someone moved this part of Nottinghamshire to that Dahn Sarf or, worse, moved that Darn Sarf to the East Midlands?

Well, I checked the map and, no, Bicester Village is still where it always has been. So too is this part of the East Midlands. Therefore the obvious thing is someone, somewhere, is so isolated from reality they consider a 3-hour 40-minute round-trip to be (and I quote again), “… just a short drive…”

Yeah, it isn’t. And it isn’t getting me down to that shopping emporium anytime soon.

  1. Listening to commercial radio… that’ll learn ya.

I really cannot listen to commercial radio anymore. The adverts just send me bonkers.
I like Classic FM, but hearing the same adverts again and again, several times an hour, drive me to distraction.
I have spent considerable time searching for a classical station that I like, without adverts (Radio 3 is bit too… Radio 3-ish for me), and did find a good one being run from a university (I think) in America, that I could stream to the Sonos. But I lost its feed during an app update and annoyingly can’t find it again.

Never been to Bicester Village… even though it’s just a short drive away for me.
