How things change…

I thought I’d throw this one out to see what views come back. I kow the answer to the second question, I can guess the answer to the first.

But I’m interested in what you might think.

Q1:
What punishment would a 13-year-old boy, convicted of breaking in to an office and stealing items of clothing, get today?

And then…

Q2:
What punishment would a 13-year-old boy who was convicted of breaking in to an office and stealing items of clothing have received if the crime was committed in 1835?

Views in a comments please?

  1. Q1: A suspended sentence and fine at worst but probably an ASBO if he’d done it more than once.

    Q2: Hanging.

    Those are my guesses anyway.

  2. Bugger all for #1

And I agree with hover on #2… I’m sure I answered a quiz question about stealing handkerchiefs once (not how to do it, mind) and the answer was execution 🙁

  3. Hiya folks. Sorry, I left this hanging far too long.

    1. If no prior convictions and a lenient magistrate, the penalty would be a fine.

    2. With no prior convictions, a 13-year-old boy was sentenced to death and executed by hanging for this offence in 1835.

    How things have changed!

  4. Hi Brennig,
