Celebrating the passing of musical friends #4

Another post in the occasional series about top quality unsigned bands who had a too-brief and almost too-beautiful burn across this planet of ours…

Hailing from Mesa, Arizona, ‘We Are They‘ were a mixed-gender band that had all the hallmarks of being a massive hit with the record-buying, track-downloading kids.

Their self-produced work featured strongly put-together songs that burst in to new musical flavours as each track progressed.

The band was backed by one of the most aggressive drummers I’ve heard in recent years; man, she can really hit the hell out of those skins. And unlike the female drummer that certain members of the musical press idolise (though why they do beats the utter fuck out of me), Meg White, We Are They’s drummer never misses a single beat.

I was in touch with We Are They and their management for a few years; I’m still in touch with their management. But he, unlike the band, is still with us. And he’s still finding quality musicians to represent.

Though I doubt he’ll find anyone as assertively excellent, as musical and as appealing as We Are They.

This is the puzzlingly titled ‘Biscuit M’ by We Are They. Plug in and enjoy:

  1. I’ve been unable to listen to any of these due to the WiFi being a bit temperamental, but it seems to be behaving today. I remember listening to and enjoying The Razorbax a couple of years back when I used to listen to This Reality on the train to London.
It’s a shame when they break up, but I s’pose it happens a lot.

    But not always.

A mate of mine used to be in a band, but when he left to get married and move to Ireland, the band didn’t split – instead, his sister took his place and they are still going today.

This Happy Breed is the name.

I’ve just downloaded Escape From Mothertraz from their website – I’d forgotten how good they actually were. Check them out, I think you’ll like ’em.

  2. Blimey you are right. They are rather good aren’t they? You have always had a talent for spotting …. erm talent.

Like Masher, my friends and next door neighbours were in a band called the Milltown Brothers. They did quite well at one point.
