GSXR Recall – What’s that all about then…

Lifted this from Streetbike’s FB page

As some of you may be aware, there is a bit of a Suzuki GSXR brake recall going on at the moment. We are getting a lot of calls on the subject so, in order to clarify the issue in language we all understand and also maybe alleviate some anxiety, I thought I would post the low down on what’s actually occurring.

If you know anybody who is possibly affected, please share this or comment with their name in the comment….what am I telling you for, you all know how FB works

I should clarify from the off…. “These are my comments and not necessarily the views of Suzuki GB… blah de blah”.

There is an official letter going out to ALL GSXR owners affected. A link to the letter and details of the work is here:-

www.streetbike.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Downloads/Recall_Document.pdf

Anyway, here goes…. Some info on the GSXR Recall. Hope this helps:-

Models affected:
GSXR600 & GSXR750 from 2004 to 2013. (K4 to L3 models).
GSXR1000 2005 to 2013. (K5 to L3 models).

There are 29,000 officially imported machines that are affected in the UK. There are almost 1000 in Streetbike’s area!!!

If you haven’t had a letter, don’t worry. If you are on the DVLA database, or Suzuki’s, you are going to get one. The letters are coming out in phases and started in November.

Even if you haven’t had a letter, you can still bowl up to Streetbike with your Reg Doc and we’ll get it started. If you haven’t got that, bring up your Reg No, full frame & engine no and we can get it started.

There is no end date for this campaign. You can have it done when you like but please bear in mind, if you wait ‘til spring, a lot of people are thinking the same. It will be mental.
In March/April there may be a considerable lead time before we can get you in.

All models mentioned qualify, even grey imports. However, we have to get full documentation and (I think) Suzuki have to check the data. They may take a little longer to get authorised. They may also have to source the replacement master cylinder from the country of origin!!

You can phone through details to book in but please bear with us. We are getting a lot of calls and they ain’t 5 mins. We have to put all your details onto the Suzuki database OR correct the outdated info they’ve got. This happens a lot. (Suzuki will have a mega clean database when all this is done but it takes about 20 mins per call at the front end to get it clean)…

The job is booked at about an hour but we like you to leave the bike with us and get on with your day. There may be other jobs that run over and delay us starting your bike. We would rather you got stuff done than sat pi***d of in the cafe for 4 hours waiting. There are courtesy bikes available.

We will replace the complete master cylinder and brake fluid. So if you think you might need pads, now’s the time. Just let us know when you book.

What’s caused all this then?

Basically, over a LONG period of time (years) WITHOUT CHANGING THE BRAKE FLUID, there’s a possibility that the brake fluid may deteriorate and absorb moisture. This is because there is a chance of corrosion on the M/Cylinder brake piston and spring. This corrosion / oxidisation process produces small amounts of gas which can be absorbed into the fluid and accumulate in the reservoir. Over time this can produce a spongy feel at the brake lever.

That’s it.

There will not be any “Oh My God!” where’s me brakes gone moment”. So please don’t worry. The job needs to be done for sure, but don’t panic.

If you want the job done now but you’ve got your bike SORN’ed, or just don’t want to bring it out in winter weather, (can’t blame you for that)…we have a van!

Once again, I Hope this helps. Please don’t fret. If you have any concerns at all or need clarification on any of this, give us a call on 0121 506 6800 OPT 3 for Workshop
