Blogathon 19/23: Publicity

Marketing your novel isn’t a thing that happens by itself. Large publishing houses have marketing teams and massive budgets. They take out full-page adverts in broadsheet and tabloid newspapers. And big full colour splash pieces in magazines. They get presenters to mention the book on national TV and Radio shows. Their pluggers get the book hooked as Book Of The Week. They get posters on the sides of London buses, and 30′ x 60′ posters on the London underground and in underground train carriages. And the author gets put on Question Time or Any Questions as a panellist or Good Morning Britain to present the papers or whatever.

All these things are beyond the reach of small-time independent authors. But (speaking as a member of the collective) we do what we can, and we do it in other ways. I’ve spammed a few friendly Facebook groups with news about my new book (‘Tempest‘, which is available in eBook and paperback). And I’ve remodelled the front page of my writing website and included some new information in the links page. And I’ve used this blog to drop a couple of subtle hints.

As well as these, though, there are a couple of affordable marketing options which I’m considering. I don’t have the creativity or the deep pockets of the marketing departments of, say, Penguin Random House or HarperCollins, but I’ve got a couple of plans that I’m working on, and hope to be able to share an update quite soon.

Anyway.

I’d be good on Any Questions.
