This afternoon I went to a meeting in the Boardroom of the Broadway Cinema (yes, on a Saturday) in the centre of Nottingham. It was a good meeting. Productive. Positive. Good decisions and outcomes.
After conclusion (the usual AOB and the usual after-meeting chat) I was walking down the corridor when I noticed a poster mounted on the wall. Before I go on I need to tell you a little about the Broadway Cinema. It’s an independent. Certain Really Big Name Hollywood Producers and Directors use the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham for preview showings. They’re not advertised, but a ‘preview’ might pop up in the listings and you’d go along not knowing what you’re in store for.
So, back to the poster.
I’m a fan of John Cusack. When I grow up I want to be John Cusack but there’s little chance of me ever growing up so that’s not likely to happen. I’m also a fan of Nick Hornby. His book Fever Pitch didn’t grab me much (being, as it is, about football), but About A Boy did and even higher on the grabbing me stakes comes High Fidelity. The book is about a record store owner in that North London and it’s a stunning piece of writing from start to finish.
Well, they (whoever ‘they’ are) made High Fidelity into a film but it accidentally got shifted from that North London to the USA (which is bad) but they (whoever ‘they’ are again) put John Cusack in the lead role. Yay!
You’re probably wondering where all this is going now, aren’t you? Well, here’s the poster that is mounted on the wall just down from the boardroom of the Broadway Cinema.

And here’s a close-up of the important bit.

John Cusack’s head – autographed by Nick Hornby! OMG!
Cool.
I have been to many cinemas in many towns, but never once have I gone there for a meeting… productive or otherwise.
Intrigued.
The meeting was nothing (directly) to do with flicks or the cinema in question. It was book-related, a Society of Authors meeting.
