A reverse view

There’s a story in today’s Sunday Express that begins:

‘The kidnapper of Madeleine McCann drugged her and her twin brother and sister so they would all be quiet while she was snatched.’

But as someone said to me just a few moments ago, another way of looking at it might be:

‘Madeleine McCann and her twin brother and sister were drugged so they would all be quiet.’

It’s a funny thing, the English language.

  1. You couldn’t accuse the Express of over-elegant usage of the English language, could you?

    Would it not be more correct to write: “Madeleine McCann, her twin brother and their sister were drugged so they would all be quiet.”?

    Or were the twin brother and sister twins too, in which case none of them were twins, but triplets?

  3. For me this showcases an example of the ineptitude of the reporting fraternity. These people are wordsmiths? Really?
